Medication for weight loss can be added to supervised programme to achieve quicker results where this is indicated. Loss of weight by reduction in fat absorption has to date been clinically proven only by means of drug called Orlistat.

Its efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness in terms of morbidity and mortality have earned it place on UK National Health Service.

Orlistat works by reducing fat absorption from meals by up to 30 per cent. Enzymes in intestines called lipases, which are involved in fat absorption are inhibited by Orlistat. Their ability to bind and enable absorption of dietary fat is rendered difficult.

The parent company, F. Hoffmann LaRoche, is actively promoting organised weight loss schemes and educational campaigns which are geared to achieve results when combined with drug.
